Rosenthal wurde 1879 gegründet. Der Firmengründer Philipp Rosenthal verlegte seine Porzellanwerkstätten von Werl (Nordrhein) nach Selb in Bayern, wo er sie später schrittweise ausbaute. Später, im Jahr 1897, gründete Philipp Rosenthal die Unternehmen „Bauer, Rosenthal & Co. Kronach“ und „Philipp Rosenthal & Co. AG“. Im Jahr 1908 kaufte Rosenthal den Porzellanhersteller „Thomas“ in Marktredwitz sowie im Jahr 1917 die Porzellanfirma „Zeidler & Co.“
