Samoke – A Garden in Smoke and Silk
Graceful, grounded, and quietly poetic, the Samoke carpet is a contemporary homage to centuries of artistic tradition. Hand-knotted at the foothills of the Himalayas near the Pak-Afghan border, this masterpiece is crafted using 95% handspun wool and 5% pure silk—its silken threads glinting in shades of ivory or deep cobalt, delicately woven into the floral motifs like moonlight caught on petals.
The all-natural dyes—derived from fruit skins and vegetable sources—lend the rug its smoky grey field, a modern canvas for the blossoming design that follows. Inspired by William Morris’s Arts & Crafts movement, the pattern is a fluid trellis of botanical repetition: stylized rosettes, eight-petal lotus medallions, and vine-bound buds bloom in quiet harmony across the surface. Each motif is a soft echo of Persian and Mughal influences—balanced, symbolic, and intentional.
Notably, the rug has no rigid border—by design. The motif breathes freely, just like a wild garden. And the short, refined cotton fringes (sourced from Pakistan) complete the piece with contemporary restraint.
More than décor, Samoke is a woven whisper—where the past and present meet underfoot in a garden of soft geometry and ethereal texture.
Motifs & Their Meanings
The Samoke carpet carries centuries of artistic symbolism through its design language:
- Rosette Medallions: Represent eternity, rebirth, and harmony. Associated with divine order and celestial cycles, rosettes are often tied to ancient goddesses like Inanna, symbols of love and transformation.
- Palmette Blossoms: Evoke immortality, sacredness, and regal beauty. Their fan-like shape is reminiscent of palm leaves, long revered in Persian and Greco-Roman aesthetics as emblems of victory and life everlasting.
- Vine Flowers & Buds: Symbolize growth, renewal, and potential. The mix of blooming and budding forms reflects the natural rhythm of life and the passage of time.
- Meandering Floral Vines: Represent continuity, flow, and interconnectedness. Like a visual journey, these vines suggest the eternal path of beauty threading through heritage and future.
