HOW TO CARE FOR CASHMERE

Cashmere is expensive and delicate, which means it needs to be cleaned and cared for if it's going to last for years and years.

Fortunately, it's not hard to keep your cashmere shawl or scarf looking pretty with a few simple steps - ensuring that it becomes softer and more luxurious with time.

CLEANING

With use, your cashmere shawl or scarf may need to be cleaned from time to time. There are two basic ways to clean cashmere properly.

The first way is to have your cashmere shawl professionally dry-cleaned. Talk to your local dry-cleaner and make sure they have some experience cleaning cashmere.

The second way is to clean your cashmere by hand. Here's the step-by-step process:

  • Carefully handwash your shawl or scarf using a delicate shampoo, such as baby shampoo.

  • Soak your cashmere in cold water (never in hot water!) and gently wash the item. Don't stretch or scrub while washing - an easy massaging will do.

  • Rinse the garment and let it dry naturally. Gently press the water our of the wet shawl, smooth it out and place it to dry flat on a clean bath towel.

  • DO NOT wring or twist your cashmere as this will damage the delicate fibres.

  • DO NOT put your cashmere in a dryer after hand washing as it will shrink and damage. Heat is very bad for cashmere, but if you really need to smooth the creases after it is dry, use your iron on the lowest heat possible.

  • Once dry your cashmere will be ready to wear again - clean as new and even softer than before.

PILLING

Pilling is a natural process even for high quality cashmere. When your cashmere is new, it may appear to pile a little bit to remove the excess fiber. Pills are the little balls of fiber that start to gather on your shawl typically in areas where there is friction.

This a natural phenomenon and will reduce over time, making your cashmere feel even more softer. One common way to stop or reduce pilling in the beginning is to carefully handwash or professionally dry-clean your cashmere.

STORING

You can protect your cashmere shawl or scarf by storing it in a closet or drawer. Make sure your cashmere is clean and completely dry before storing.

A good tip is to separate your cashmere from other clothing using tissue paper (our packaging comes with tissue paper you can use for storing) or in a ziplog bag.

It's always a good idea to keep cashmere away from heat sources and direct sunlight to preserve the colour and luxury of the cashmere fabric.
