Gareth is afraid of moving from junior school to grammar school. He believes he will lose his friends and his way of life. The world is a smaller place and the village is the universe for most children who look after themselves in a community which is supportive in an unobtrusive way. Gareth's journey through 1962-3 is beset with hopes and fears and although he would like to find a way to maintain his current way of life he eventually realises that life changes irrevocably. He sets out his story in a series of journals which he hides cleverly. A stranger discovers the first journal in a house in which Gareth lived and this sets the finder on a voyage of discovery - discovery about Gareth and the secret of truth and fiction. The story is based in the village of Llandaff North in Cardiff, Wales.
