Designed to maximize space without compromising protection, the Tripp Lite SmartRack Industrial Enclosure is the rugged solution for housing rack-mount equipment in tight or high-traffic environments. This NEMA 3R-rated, wall-mount enclosure is crafted from steel and finished in a bold red powder coating, delivering dependable security, durability, and organization for critical network infrastructure and industrial gear. With a 12U capacity for 19-inch rack-mount equipment, it provides ample room for network switches, patch panels, small servers, and related components while keeping cables neatly managed and accessible. The combination of a hinged back, a lockable front, and a built-in cooling fan with a thermal switch ensures equipment operates within safe temperature ranges, even in demanding settings.

  • Space-saving wall-mount design for 12U of 19-inch rack equipment: This compact enclosure is engineered to fit in confined spaces and concentrate essential networking hardware where it’s most needed. Its 12U rack capacity supports a wide range of devices, including network switches, patch panels, small servers, and other 19-inch equipment, enabling clean, organized, and scalable configurations in data closets, maintenance rooms, or industrial environments.
  • Rugged steel construction with red powder-coated finish: Built to endure demanding environments, the SRN3RR12US uses heavy-gauge steel for structural integrity andShielding against impacts, dust, and contaminants. The red powder-coated exterior not only adds visibility and branding but also provides corrosion resistance, helping equipment stay protected in both indoor and outdoor-adjacent zones.
  • NEMA 3R rating for reliable protection in harsh environments: With a NEMA 3R designation, this enclosure is designed to resist rain, sleet, and snow, as well as dirt and windblown debris. It’s an ideal choice for spaces that require weather-resistant enclosure protection, including exterior walls, loading docks, and partially sheltered outdoor areas where equipment housing must remain secure and interior components protected.
  • Hinged back with a locking front door for easy cable management: The hinged back panel allows convenient rear access for cabling, power distribution, and equipment installation, while the locking front door provides secure access control. This combination simplifies cable routing, testing, and future upgrades, helping technicians maintain a tidy, serviceable rack while maintaining security.
  • Integrated cooling with a fan and thermal switch for safe operation: Equipment often generates heat, and proper airflow is essential to avoid performance degradation or component failure. The enclosure includes a fan with a thermal switch to regulate internal temperature, delivering efficient cooling with quieter operation and extending the life of installed devices even in busy network closets or shop floors.

how to install Tripp Lite by Eaton SmartRack Industrial Enclosure

Step 1 — Choose a secure, stud-backed wall location: Select a solid wall area with enough clearance to accommodate the 28 in. depth and a minimum of airflow around the enclosure. Confirm the location supports the combined weight of the empty enclosure plus installed equipment. Use a level to mark anchor points that align with the enclosure’s mounting holes.

Step 2 — Mount the enclosure to the wall: Drill pilot holes and install appropriate wall anchors or lag screws suited to the wall material (concrete, masonry, or wood studs). Lift the enclosure into place and secure it firmly with the supplied mounting hardware, ensuring the unit sits level and securely attached to the wall to withstand equipment loads and potential impacts.

Step 3 — Route cables and plan rear wiring: Open the hinged back for easy access and arrange cable runs to minimize cable strain. Plan for adequate space behind the equipment to ensure ventilation, simplify future expansion, and maintain organized routing for power, data, and any management accessories.

Step 4 — Install 19-inch rack-mount equipment: Slide in the rack-mount devices, aligning them with the vertical rails. Secure each device using standard cage nuts and screws, mindful of weight distribution to maintain balance and stability. Take advantage of the 23-inch recommended maximum depth for equipment to ensure proper fit and ventilation without crowding.

Step 5 — Close, lock, and test: After cabling is complete, route final patches and power connections, then close the front door and engage the locking mechanism. Power on equipment and verify that cooling fans engage appropriately with temperature changes, fans run quietly, and there is no abnormal heat build-up in the enclosure. Conduct a quick functional test of connected devices to confirm proper operation and cable integrity.

Step 6 — Maintenance and accessibility: Establish routine checks for door locks, seals, and cable management. Periodically inspect for dust buildup, verify that the cooling system responds to temperature shifts, and confirm that the enclosure maintains a clean interior for long-term reliability.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: What equipment size does this enclosure accommodate?

A: It is designed to hold up to 12U of 19-inch rack-mount equipment, including network switches, patch panels, and small servers. It can support equipment depth up to 23 inches, with a total enclosure depth of 28 inches.

  • Q: Is the enclosure suitable for outdoor or damp environments?

A: Yes. The enclosure carries a NEMA 3R rating, providing protection against rain, sleet, and snow, as well as dust and debris in outdoor or semi-exposed spaces. It is built from steel with a durable red powder-coated finish for added durability.

  • Q: How is security handled?

A: The front door is lockable, providing physical security for the enclosed equipment. Consider additional security measures such as location protection and access control if needed for sensitive deployments.

  • Q: What about cooling and temperature management?

A: The enclosure includes a fan with a thermal switch to maintain safe operating temperatures for installed equipment. This helps prevent thermal throttling and extends the life of electronics in environments where ambient temperatures can rise.

  • Q: Are there any special installation considerations?

A: Ensure the wall surface can support the enclosure's weight when fully loaded. Plan for cable management by using the hinged back panel and leaving space for airflow. Verify that equipment depth does not exceed recommended limits to avoid interference with the door and internal components.

Good to have if you've never seen the iTEP exam, but don't rely on it to boost your scores
Format: Paperback
This book is good in that it comes with two practice tests: one in the beginning of the book, one in the end of the book. The grading rubric is helpful too. However, the actual guide part of the book, doesn't help too much with how to improve test scores. What I like least about this guide is that it won't tell you which questions you answered incorrectly on the practice exams. A good test prep guide will tell you what you answered incorrectly, and will tell you what logic to follow to get to the correct answer. In the reading passages, it would be nice to know where I can find evidence to justify the "correct" answer. In the grammar section, it would be nice to know which rule I'm violating. Any test guide should always come with some testing strategies. I.E. If this question is taking up too much time, skip it and go to the next one. This guide lacks simple strategies like that. Simple strategies like that could be useful when incorporated into this guide because there are certain sections on the exam that you can go back to previous questions, but some sections where the "back" button is disabled. Overall, if you've never seen an iTEP exam before, this book is certainly helpful in that it will give you an idea of what you will be testing for. However, this book alone won't help you achieve a score of 6. The table of contents itself will tell you there are only 86 pages of actual content covering test material. That's not enough to cover how to excel in the exam.
