DESCRIPTION
Watercolor by Listed Artist Helen Bertha Dooley
Helen Bertha Dooley was born in San Jose, California on July 27, 1907. Dooley graduated from San Jose State College in 1928 and in the 1930s studied art at the California School of Fine Arts, Choinard Art Institute, Claremont College, and with Douglas Donaldson, Maurice Sterne, and Millard Sheets. Her teaching career included San Jose State College in 1928; Oakland Secondary Schools, 1928-30; San Jose Adult Education, 1933-37; Scripps College, 1937-39; Kern County Schools, 1939-48; and College of the Pacific, 1948-64. Dooley won many awards in California shows after the early 1930s. For thirty years she lived on the Monterey Peninsula and maintained a gallery in Carmel. She died there on January 15, 1994.
Equally facile in oil, watercolor, and acrylic, she produced brightly colored paintings which border on the abstract. Member: Society of Western Artists; Carmel Art Association; California Teachers Association; Stockton Art League. Exhibited: Oakland Art Gallery, 1930s; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, 1943, 1945; Carmel Art Guild, 1946; Society of Western Artists; California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 1951 (first prize); California State Fair, 1957; Haggin Museum, Stockton, 1962 (solo); Carmel Art Association, 1995 (solo). Works Held: University of the Pacific; Monterey Peninsula Museum; Shimizu Museum, Japan.
