A celebration of the legacy of the Village Voice bookshop in Paris, founded by Odile Hellier in 1982—a hub of social life and a refuge for artists, writers, and anglophone literary life for over three decades until it closed in 2012.
“My entire sense of Paris centers on Odile and the bookshop.” —Richard Ford
"For literature lovers, it’s a feast." —Publishers Weekly
In July of 1982, on a quiet boulevard just off the bustling Boulevard Saint-German, Odile Hellier opened the Village Voice Bookshop. Over the next three decades, the blue-shuttered shop would become one of the most famous English-language bookstores in Paris—a vivacious hub for artists, writers, and a haven for anglophone literary life. After the its closing, Odile found herself with hundreds of tapes of various talks given at the bookshop by the greatest artists of their generation.
These voices from the past were the spontaneous exchanges of literary and cultural icons such as Susan Sontag, Margaret Atwood, Don DeLillo, Allen Ginsberg, Toni Morrison, Michael Ondaatje, Jim Harrison, Barry Gifford, Adrienne Rich, David Sedaris, Amy Tan, Edmund White, Art Spiegelman, and Stephen Spender, all of whom were drawn to Odile’s tiny bookstore on Rue Princesse. This carefully curated historical archive is an enduring conversation across time, and a memoir of one woman’s beloved store.
“… when you squeezed into the narrow event space on the Voice’s upper floor, French and international book lovers mingled with Parisian editors and publishers, shared a glass of wine, a new discovery, a heretical opinion, and took the conversation outside to the sidewalk of the Rue Princesse, for another shared pleasure: an unguilty cigarette.” — Livia Manera, The New Yorker
“A stroll from rue de l’Odéon, Les Deux Magots or the Luxembourg Gardens, the hanging sign reads Village Voice: Anglo-American Bookshop. The narrow door and window frames are painted Greek island blue… Lingering a while in front of the window display, you’ll want to dive inside, into an ocean of story.” —Hazel Rowley, Bookforum

Elegant and Perfect for Special Occasions
Color: Black, Color: Black
I bought this clutch for a wedding, and it was absolutely perfect. The faux suede feels soft and luxurious, and the design looks far more expensive than it actually is. It’s the ideal size to hold my phone, keys, lipstick, and a few essentials without feeling bulky.
The color matched beautifully with my dress, and the little metallic details gave it just the right amount of sparkle for an evening event. I received several compliments throughout the night!
It’s versatile enough for weddings, cocktail parties, or even a fancy dinner out. If you’re looking for a stylish and affordable evening bag, this one is definitely worth it.

This is such a super cute and classy clutch. The fabric feels so good. I love the gold chain strap. It’s got a good about of room inside as well. Perfect for a dressy outfit and event.

Very good quality item.
Color: Small-brown
OMGOSH! I love this purse! It is exactly what I've been searching for. I don't normally carry a purse. Wearing jeans or pants most of the time, I use my pockets: phone, flat wallet, lipstick, keys, and I'm ready to go. Occasionally, however, I wear an outfit where the phone is too bulky, like in a dress pocket, or there are no pockets at all. Not sure how I came to own such clothing, but be that as it may, I've been looking for a purse that would be simple, functional, and cute. I don't like large purses and phone size purses are just too small that even my few items overstuff them. Then I end up clipping the keys on the side which is not very sophisticated looking (more hobo than boho) So the search has been ongoing, until my package arrived today! Yay!
This little Iswee purse is PERFECT! It has a clean design with just a few simple elements that give it that polished look. I got the small (6" high & 9" wide) in brown leather. The color is that warm, orangy-brown that I love. The leather is soft but sturdy not supple like a slouch bag but not stiff like a clutch. It is fully lined with interior and exterior, zippered and slide-in pockets. The hardware is a gunmetal color and heavy, seemingly of good quality. The over the shoulder strap can be adjusted with the buckle from 40" to 47" (length includes hardware) and is of a stiffer, belt like leather.
(It even smells like leather)
I may just order another in a fun color. It's worth every penny.
