Applications of Premium Sheep Wool Insulation

The Premium Sheep Wool Insulation is made in a unique way with a concertina structure which gives it the premium density, structural integrity and loftiness without the need for added plastic fibres. It is a premium insulation that can be used for insulating walls (internal and external), roofs ceilings, lofts and floors. Although thick, it can very easily be cut to size simply by ripping the material by hand. There is no requirement for any cutting equipment to fit the Premium Sheep Wool insulation.

It comes in standard widths of 380mm and 570mm to fit rafter gaps of 400mm and 600mm respectively.

The benefits of wool insulation

Wool as insulation helps to reduce energy costs and prevents the loss of energy to the external environment (just like our Chimney Sheep® draught excluders, really!). Here are a few reasons why wool works for building insulation:

  • Heat Insulation - sheep wool acts as a brilliant heat insulation product because of the wool's crimped structure. When wool fibres are packed together, they form millions of tiny air pockets which trap air. This keeps buildings warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Wool insulation works just as well as manmade insulation products but is more sustainable and better for the environment, requiring less than 15% of the energy needed to produce glass fibre insulation.
  • Humidity regulating - wool is hygroscopic so it will readily absorb water from the air. It can absorb up to 35% of its own weight from the surrounding atmosphere depending on the humidity, without feeling damp. If you have a damp home, the wool can help absorb moisture then wick it away when there’s enough airflow to dry it out.
  • Sound Insulation - wool insulation is a very effective airborne and structure borne acoustic insulation due to the multiple layered wool fibres. This significantly reduces noises that can be heard throughout a building.
  • Hypoallergenic - wool is hypoallergenic as it is resistant to bacteria, mould and mildew that can trigger allergic reactions in many people. Our insulation causes no irritation to the eyes, skin or lungs and wool fibres present no hazard to your health.
  • Absorbs high volatile compounds (VOCs) – wool is able to absorb and break down indoor air pollutants, such as formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, making air cleaner and safer. VOC’s are in the air all around us, especially in new products and furniture and things that have been varnished or painted. The VOC's bind permanently with the keratin in the wool fibre. You can read more about it here.
  • Naturally breathable - wool is naturally breathable, allowing air and moisture to move and circulate in a space (purifying air that moves through the wool), whilst still insulating and keeping your home warm. Think of it like a nice feather duvet, that keeps you snug and warm but still permits moisture and air to percolate through.
  • Naturally fire retardant – wool does not support combustion and it will extinguish itself in the event of fire. In fact, 100% wool insulation has a higher fire resistance than cellulose and cellular plastic insulation. Wool does not burn, but instead singes away from fire and extinguishes (wool has a very high inflammation point of 560°C due to its high Nitrogen content of ~16%). The fibres are self-extinguishing because of its high Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI=25.2), which means to completely burn wool an oxygen content of 25.2% is necessary whereas air only has 21%.

Key features of Sheep Wool Insulation Premium Rolls

Not all sheep wool insulation is made equal and ours is pretty special! Here’s why:

  • 100% Wool – our Sheep Wool Insulation is made from 100% pure wool. Using wool is beneficial because it is a much more environmentally friendly way to insulate yet works just as effectively as manmade insulation. Wool is a renewable source (as long as there are sheep grazing, there will be sheep that need to be sheared for their wellbeing!) and it is also completely compostable. When the insulation comes to the end of its long life and disposed of, it can be put in compost where it will decompose pretty quickly and release some valuable nutrients into the ground.
  • Plastic free - many other sheep wool insulations on the market have around 25% of plastic additives added to give it “loft” and make it perform effectively as insulation. To ensure our 100% wool insulation remains “lofty” the wool is carded (combed), so all of the fibres are running in the same direction. This extremely thin layer of carded wool fibres is then layered numerous times to give the end product its desired thickness. These layers are mechanically bonded to produce a thick, strong roll of insulation.
  • Parasite protected - the insulation is treated with IONIC PROTECT®. This is exactly the same treatment as we use on our Chimney Sheep® draught excluders! It is a really clever technology which causes a slight alteration of the ionic charge of the wool fibre through a plasma-ion treatment. This means that moths don’t even recognise it as wool and fly on by! Other moth deterrents rely on the moth larvae eating a little bit of the product in order to be poisoned by the treatment – this means a little bit of it deteriorates each time a moth larvae chews on it.
  • Energy efficient - wool is designed by nature to save energy. Our Sheep Wool Insulation requires only a fraction of the energy to produce compared to that of manmade counterparts. This means that Sheep Wool Insulation will pay back its energy costs more than 5 times sooner (only 15 kW of energy are used to produce 1 m³).
  • Easy to install – our Sheep Wool Insulation is safe and easy to install. It fits around shapes and joists easily and comes in a variety of product types and sizes. All our insulation products are made to roll widths that fit standard joist gaps generally - 400mm and 600mm. It is available in rolls that are 380mm and 570mm wide respectively. You can fit it anywhere – from external or internal walls, under timber or concrete floors to the attic/loft or between the rafters. If you want to make existing attic/loft insulation more effective, you can roll out Sheep Wool Insulation over the existing insulation rather than having to remove it. This can also be safer than removing hazardous material.

Installation instructions (loft, ceilings and floors)

  1. Make sure the area is clean and dust-free.
  2. Unroll the insulation between the joists.
  3. Cut to the appropriate length either by tearing is using your hands or using a decent pair of scissors. If using as loft insulation, it’s advisable to leave a 50mm gap at the eaves to enable the loft space to be properly ventilated.
  4. Gently tap the insulation into place, making sure you don’t compress it.
  5. When joining two rolls, press the seams together to create a close join.
  6. If you’re doing a double layer, put the next layer at 90° to the base layer, so it goes across the rows.

Installation instructions (walls)

  1. Unroll the wool and hold it up to the top of the wall / ceiling that you want to apply it to.
  2. If needed, the insulation can be stapled to the rafters at intervals to hold keep it in place. However, due to the density of the Premium rolls, it can often be stuffed in and it should hold itself in place.
  3. Trim it off at the bottom when you’ve finished fixing it. This can be done by tearing it with your hands.

    Convenient non-toxic option
Exactly what I was looking for. Non-toxic convenient option for sunblock. I keep one in my purse, our outdoor bag and in the car. Rubs in easy no weirdness. We are light complected so I'm not sure if it would leave white cast on a darker skin tone. I use it daily on my face, ears and hands.

Mineral sunscreen stick review - poor at blending
I’m writing a review for this product as well as a number of other mineral sunscreen sticks (MSS) after testing a bunch of them—scroll down to point #6 below if you want to know which one I thought was the best. I’ve placed this exact review on every single other MSS I used. I specifically elected to go with mineral-based sunscreens—lots of talk on the environmental effects of the other sunscreens (not sure how much of this is actually true, but I’m willing to avoid the non-mineral sunscreens given the minimal investment on my part). Here are a few important points about this review: 1. No one paid me to write this review. I put down my own $140 to get all 13 of these MSSs. I just wanted to find the best one by limiting as much bias as possible. Yes, my wife definitely gave me the you’re-crazy-but-I-guess-I’m-stuck-now look. 2. Quick sunscreen tutorial. Most dermatologists say we should try to get an SPF of 30+. Each 1% of zinc counts for 1.6 SPF, so to hit SPF 30, your zinc has to be 18.75%+. Each 1% of titanium counts for 2.6 SPF, so a combination of zinc and titanium could get you to SPF 30 as well. Titanium apparently isn’t good enough to block UV-A (cancer causing and photo-aging) light on its own, so you must add zinc to it. I calculated the SPF based on the stated zinc and titanium percentages on the label and these calculations were usually different from the quoted SPFs (they might be adding more SPFs from other ingredients, but I can’t say for sure). Nine of the 13 MSSs had calculated SPFs 30+. Only 4 of the 13 had a calculated SPF greater than or equal to the label SPF. 3. Because I can’t judge cancer prevention or aging blockade in the short term, avoiding burns and eye irritation are the most important immediately observable elements of an MSS. Every MSS I tested did equally well in burn avoidance and eye irritation avoidance. 4. It should be noted that I’m not Caucasian, I’m South Asian. If you don’t know what that is exactly, Wikipedia it or watch some Russell Peters standup comedy (his old stuff, not his new stuff). My skin color is probably similar to that of Benjamin Bratt (mind you, we’re talking about his skin color only… I’m not even in the same galaxy of overall looks as he is, much to my wife’s chagrin). The ability of a white-colored MSS to blend is crucial for me. And yes, even brown people like me need sunscreen. It would absolutely suck for me as a South Asian to have a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, skillfully dodge those bullets with diet and exercise and luck, only to get taken out by skin cancer. 5. I like most scents. It seems like so many things are going unscented now—an MSS that is truly unscented is okay, but a lot of things labeled “unscented,” actually have an odd, unpleasant (sort of like bad oatmeal) smell to them. The scent score is logged as a “3” if it’s truly unscented, a “5” if it has a great scent, and a “1” if it smells bad. 6. Here’s the final conclusion. Only 3 of the 13 MSSs I tested had the following combination of characteristics: calculated SPF 30+, smell score 3+, and blend score 4+. These top three were: Neutrogena Sheer Zinc, Aveeno Positively Mineral, and Blue Lizard. When you factor in cost, it’s a no-brainer—Neutrogena and Aveeno were only half the cost of Blue Lizard. Therefore, my two winners (tied for first place) are Neutrogena Sheer Zinc and Aveeno Positively Mineral. Honorable mention for Blue Lizard—twice as expensive as the others, but might be slightly easier to maneuver on your face given the smaller size stick (this is a stretch compliment for Blue Lizard—I think NSZ and APM are just better). Hope this helps you select your next mineral sunscreen stick! A^2

    Good For Faster Tanning
Style: SPF 15, Size: 8 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This is a terrific sunscreen for those looking to tan faster. It's not as low as 8 SPF, or as high as the minimum recommended 30 SPF, but it'll get you darker faster. Apply this 15 minutes before going in the sun, and reapply every two hours. As someone who recently went to Hawaii and got 2-3 hours of sun every other day for two weeks, reapplying is absolutely crucial. We went once and reapplied after three hours, and that gave us some pain. Not as much pain as not reapplying at all, but it definitely taught us to reapply no matter what, if you are in the sun. Overall, this applied cleanly and protected our skin about 93%. And 93% is better than not wearing any sunscreen at all.
