The AP Limited Editions Writer Maki-e Fountain Pen - Statue of Liberty (Piece Unique) is a singular artistic tribute to one of the world's most recognizable symbols of freedom and hope. Executed as a one-of-one creation, this remarkable fountain pen combines traditional Japanese urushi and maki-e artistry with one of the defining icons of the American experience. Rather than approaching the subject through strict realism, the artist interprets the Statue of Liberty through a rich, almost storybook-like composition that blends symbolism, patriotism, and decorative artistry into an object that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant.

As a Piece Unique, this fountain pen exists entirely on its own. No second example has been produced, and the artwork's particular arrangement of colors, sculptural elements, and symbolic motifs belongs exclusively to this single creation. It occupies a fascinating place where Japanese decorative traditions and American cultural symbolism converge, resulting in a work that feels both deeply personal and universally meaningful.

Craftsmanship & Design

The pen immediately captivates through its vibrant palette of red, white, blue, and gold. Bands of stars and stripes wrap around the cap and barrel, creating a rhythmic composition that recalls the American flag while simultaneously functioning as a decorative framework for the pen's more narrative elements.

The body itself is rendered in luminous gold tones that appear to glow beneath the lacquer. Rising from this radiant backdrop is a beautifully executed depiction of the Statue of Liberty, dressed in rich blue and carefully modeled with remarkable detail. The folds of the robe, the crown's distinctive rays, and the torch held aloft all possess an impressive dimensionality that gives the artwork both presence and movement.

Additional decorative elements enrich the composition. Flowing clouds and stars create an atmosphere of elevation and aspiration, while the layered lacquer work provides exceptional depth. The juxtaposition of brilliant patriotic colors against the warm metallic surface results in a pen that feels celebratory yet sophisticated rather than overtly literal.

The Story Behind the Artwork

The Statue of Liberty is far more than a monumental sculpture. Presented by France to the United States in 1886, the statue quickly evolved into one of the most enduring symbols of liberty, democracy, and opportunity. For generations of immigrants arriving by sea, the sight of Lady Liberty standing in New York Harbor represented hope, new beginnings, and the promise of a future yet to be written.

The artist embraces these themes through carefully selected visual elements. The statue itself forms the emotional centerpiece of the composition, symbolizing enlightenment and the ideals of freedom and self-determination. Her raised torch represents knowledge, aspiration, and the enduring pursuit of liberty.

The stars and stripes woven throughout the composition serve a dual purpose. They immediately establish the pen's American identity while also symbolizing unity through diversity, a reminder that individual states and peoples can come together to form something greater than themselves. The flowing clouds and stars surrounding the statue introduce a more poetic dimension, suggesting ideals that transcend geography and reminding the viewer that liberty itself is an aspiration that continually reaches beyond the horizon.

The warm gold foundation beneath the composition further enriches the symbolism. Gold has long represented achievement, dignity, and enduring value. Here it provides a radiant setting for the artwork, elevating the Statue of Liberty from a historical monument into an emblem of timeless ideals and human aspiration.

The Art of Maki-e

Maki-e is among Japan's most respected decorative arts, employing urushi lacquer and precious metal powders to create surfaces of exceptional beauty and depth. Traditionally associated with nature, poetry, and historical narratives, the technique proves remarkably adaptable when applied to themes beyond its conventional repertoire.

The Statue of Liberty demonstrates this adaptability beautifully. The artist employs the vocabulary of Japanese lacquer art to interpret an American icon with remarkable sensitivity and originality. Metallic surfaces, carefully layered colors, and dimensional decorative elements work together to create a composition that feels simultaneously rooted in tradition and refreshingly contemporary.

The result is more than a depiction of a monument. It is an artistic dialogue between cultures, illustrating how universal ideals can be interpreted through different artistic languages while retaining their emotional power and symbolic significance.

Writing Experience

Beneath its extraordinary artistic presentation lies a fountain pen intended to be both admired and enjoyed in use. The generous proportions provide excellent balance and comfort during extended writing sessions, while the 14-karat gold nib delivers a smooth, expressive writing experience characterized by dependable ink flow and responsive performance.

The cartridge/converter filling system offers modern practicality while preserving the elegant proportions of the pen. Despite its status as a Piece Unique, the Statue of Liberty remains fundamentally a writer's instrument - one that invites moments of reflection each time it is uncapped and placed to paper.

Collector Significance

The Statue of Liberty occupies a particularly compelling position within contemporary artistic writing instruments because it brings together two distinct traditions rarely encountered within a single object. It employs one of Japan's most revered decorative techniques to celebrate one of America's most iconic cultural symbols, creating a pen that transcends national boundaries and speaks to universal themes of freedom, hope, and aspiration.

Its status as a Piece Unique further elevates its significance. Unlike numbered limited editions, this pen exists entirely as an individual artistic statement. The precise arrangement of imagery, colors, and decorative elements can never be duplicated. For collectors of exceptional writing instruments, it represents not only a beautifully executed work of maki-e artistry but also an entirely singular expression of one of humanity's most enduring ideals.

Obsessed. Soothing, effective, fragrance-free, incredibly healing
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I’ve been loving this so much I bought a second bottle after a few days of using it. It has all the skin soothing benefits of the tolerance lotion cleanser, but it’s also a really great cleanser. It’s almost not noticeable how good it is at cleansing because your skin doesn’t feel stripped after, but it takes things off really quickly. I was worried because it doesn’t foam a lot and it feels so nurturing — much like the tolerance lotion cleanser (which I use as a second cleanse when my skin needs a few days to recover from something like a derm office treatment) — but when I wash again with my favorite HG cleanser nothing extra comes off, and I tested it twice on waterproof eyeliner that I’d swiped on my forearm for an hour or so, the eyeliner dissolved and wiped off with two or three gentle swipes. It has a very emollient texture, so when you rub it against your skin it slips so easily you don’t realize it’s dissolving and taking things away because there is no friction. So it’s great at taking off makeup, it’s AMAZING at cleaning makeup brushes, and IT DOES NOT BURN MY EYES AT ALL. Also, it is FRAGRANCE-FREE… before I bought it I read a review complaining about smelling a citrus fragrance, that person either has some sort of brain tumor or something spilled on their bottle when it was in a warehouse because this is definitely a fragrance-free product. Prior to trying this, I had tried another cleanser that gave me weird acne hives all over my chest (never happened to me before) and I was struggling to heal the acne and the irritation. I noticed an immediate difference when I started using the tolerance cleanser on it; the fresh redness went away, the acne started healing, and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been healing fast. So I’ve been using this on my body as well and it’s soothing and moisturizing in all the places where other things have been drying. I have mild rosacea and I hadn’t realized how irritated my skin was from the last thing I’d tried until after 5 days or so of using this my skin tone looked much more even and the stubborn PIH I have from a two-zit hormonal breakout a month ago finally looked dramatically lighter (as recently as the week before, I’d needed to cover them with high-coverage concealer). Because this doesn’t foam much, some people might not realize how well it’s cleaning… I encourage you to judge it based on how your skin looks and feels. Since it is very emollient though, I do think it’s important to use it with a face wash scrubber or washcloth just to ensure you’re getting some mild mechanical exfoliation and clearing away skin cells that could be trapping stuff in your pores. For this reason, I do wash my face with this twice so the first wash can get off makeup/debris/oil and then the second wash can really penetrate and clean my skin.

No Scent and Gentle
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I broke out in a case of Perioral Dermatitis recently and bought this product to help before I could see my doctor. Avene Tolerance facial cleanser has no scent and is very gentle on my skin. It didn’t burn when washing with this product, and even helped to slough off the dead skin around my lips. My face feels clean, not dry. I am still going to see my doc to get an RX for the inflammation, but I do believe this product helped to alleviate the dryness and tightness of my skin and lips. I’ve used other Avene products and I’m very happy with them. Even though these products are more expensive, to me they are well worth the money because they are much more gentle on the skin than any other products I’ve used. I will buy this product again just because of the fact that it’s so gentle. PS: at the time of purchase for this product, I also bought Avene’s Tolerance Control Skin Recovery Cream (you don’t need to use a lot of this one on your entire face), and Avene’s Cicalfate for lips. Between these 3 products, my lips and skin feel a lot better (however, I will still see my doctor because I have Crohn’s Disease and Perioral Dermatitis is considered an extra-intestinal side effect of Crohn’s).

Gentle everyday cleanser!
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
My go to nightly cleanser! Gentle yet effective. Removes makeup without leaving any residue behind. Also does not dry out my skin or cause breakouts! I would say it’s more of a cream cleanser though. It does not really foam up. It’s a decent size bottle for the price. The pump dispenser is an added plus!

So gentle and moisturizing. Great for super sensitive skin.
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
This is so gentle and moisturizing. Does not irritate my skin in any way. My skin is super sensitive and I have atopic dermatitis, it has been the best cleanser I’ve used to date. I was using another one from this brand and it was fine but this is the one I will continually stick with from now on. Just hope they don’t change the formula.
