The Tamiya 1/350 Japanese Cruiser Mogami Early Version (78021) reproduces the Mogami in her original heavy cruiser configuration with ten 20.3cm guns — before her later conversion to an aviation cruiser. The Mogami-class was a technically innovative design that pushed the limits of the Washington Treaty system by fitting ten gun turrets on a hull officially classed as a light cruiser. This earlier configuration represents the ship as she appeared at the Battle of Midway in 1942, where Mogami suffered severe damage from a collision and US air attacks.
