De vlag van Zuid-Korea, ook wel bekend als de “Taegeukgi”, is doordrenkt van symboliek en filosofie. Het ontwerp bestaat uit een witte achtergrond met in het midden een rood-blauw yin-yang symbool, omringd door vier zwarte trigrammen uit het I Tjing. Deze elementen staan voor harmonie, balans en de natuurlijke krachten van het universum.

Symboliek en achtergrond

De witte achtergrond symboliseert vrede en zuiverheid. Het rood-blauwe middensymbool vertegenwoordigt het evenwicht tussen tegengestelde krachten (yin en yang), zoals licht en donker of man en vrouw. De vier zwarte trigrammen (geplaatst in elke hoek) vertegenwoordigen hemel, aarde, water en vuur. De vlag werd officieel aangenomen op 15 oktober 1949 en weerspiegelt zowel het culturele erfgoed als de moderne identiteit van Zuid-Korea.
