BAIRD, Mrs W.J. The Twentieth Century Retractor, Chess Fantasies, and Letter Problems. London: Henry Sotheran Ltd. 1907.

Large 8vo. Original red cloth, gilt triple fillets and motif to front, gilt lettering to spine, floral gold endpapers, all edges gilt; unpaginated, printed throughout in red and black, b&w frontis portrait of author with tissue guard; evidence of library label removed from front board, occasional spotting mainly to fly-leaves, a little shelfwear, very good; presentation inscription to the Hastings Chess Club to half-title (see below), with the club's red inkstamps to prelims and title page, shelf mark "701" to half title, small stickers to spine and front paste-down.

First edition. A presentation of three hundred previously unknown chess problems, each one prefaced with a Shakespearean quotation that apparently gives a clue to the solution. Published by Henry Sotheran in 1907.

This is the work of a true chess pioneer and a rare female participant in a very masculine world. Edith Baird (1859-1924) composed chess problems from an early age and, especially after her marriage in 1880, became widely published. In 1893 she won a prestigious international award and saw her problems appearing in The Times, and in 1902, after fourteen years, produced her first book, Seven Hundred Chess Problems. By the time of her death in 1924 she had created over two thousand chess problems, a remarkably prolific achievement.

The book presented a completely new kind of chess problem - the retractor, in which the solver must work backwards and take a specified number of moves. The resulting puzzles range from the relatively benign to the almost impossible, including two in which the printed board is completely lacking in pieces.

Provenance: From the library of the Hastings and St. Leonards Chess Club. Founded in 1882, the club is still thriving today.

LOVE this blanket hoodie!!
Color: Grey, Size: Standard
I’ve been using my Blanket Hoodie mainly while working at home and relaxing in the evenings. It’s exceptionally soft and warm! Pros: • Thick, cozy sherpa material that keeps me warm without feeling heavy • Good length • Comfortable enough to wear during long TV binges or while I'm at my computer working from home! Cons: • Hood is roomy and shifts around a bit • Sleeves are slightly This hoodie is a solid choice if you want something warmer than a typical sweatshirt. I might try a different size next time for a better sleeve fit, but I would recommend this for anyone who gets cold easily.

Great gifts for grandkids
Color: Olive Green, Size: Small
We bought eight wearable blanket hoodies for our grandkids that were 12 and younger. Each child got a different color and design that we picked to match their personalities and preferred toy or activities. They were everyone’s favorite Christmas gift (December 2025). A month later I they are still wearing them everywhere because the are fun and comfortable. They use them indoors and out as they are warm enough to replace a jacket or heavy sweat shirt but not too warm for indoor. Did not have any quality issues with any of them. They are designed to be roomy with sleeves that will cover their hands if they want but they have a cuff to keep them off their hands when they want. The two available sizes worked with everyone from 3 years old to 12 years old.

Very very soft & super duper warm
Color: Grey, Size: Standard
So soft & comfy. I LOVE IT! I had another brand before this one and it wasn’t nearly as soft or as thick as this one. When I’m freezing & everyone else is not it saves the day. I can go outside when it’s cold and not feel like I’m dying from the cold like usual. You will warm up fast BUT I have to come out of it shortly after putting it on. I can’t wear it long term inside unless I turn the heat WAY down
